The last day, Memorial Day, was
almost my "memorial" ride.
We drove to Indian Grave Gap on the NC/TN border.
We rode to the left, made the first right and went straight up forever.
I told everyone that the distance was about a tenth of a mile.
I couldn't remember and didn't want anyone to go down to Erwin.
I'll never be trusted for mileage again.

There were horse riders at the
overlook of the Nolachucki.
We could hear the train go by on the way down but couldn't see it.

Fred clings to the rocks for dear
life.
I'm pretty sure it was Janice that pushed him off.

Don't worry. He won't jump. Rike has
a BMW.

In "imagined time" or "painful time" the ride around the "Basin" lasted
about 3 days!

It was compared to a really rough "boot camp" before and after the "view".

Rike may have been voted to be my executioner.

It was a very long day on Unaka.
Too long.
Nobody packed enough food including myself.
I gave most of my water away but I still heard the rumbles of mutiny.
I could overhear the riders talking behind me as we rode.
It was decided that I would be the first one eaten if they were out there
much longer.
I rode faster!
The downhill award went to Bryan Bishop.
I think I speak for everyone:
He can have it.
He made it look easy and he wasn't wearing a football uniform either.
The waterfall/trail we were riding was horrendous!
The way down to the "Basin" was rocky and rutted.
My hip and back have been sorely taxed by the ride and I didn't fall once.
For those of us who break like twigs,
we doff our helmets to Bryan
Fred & Janice Ammanns were very strong on the hills though living on the
coast.
Fred was a kid in the candy store on a mountain.
On our "easy day", Fred drove to Asheville and Bent Creek to mountain-bike
there.
Fred & Janice are tough as nails.
They'll work you over in your own backyard.
Fred Wins the honors of "Mountain-biking Dude"!
